Explanation
Certain groups in the platform are marked as Default groups. These are system-predefined groups that are tightly integrated into the OpenStudio permissions ecosystem and organizational workflows. To protect platform stability, default groups have the following restrictions:
- Their membership rules cannot be edited or deleted.
- They cannot be deleted from the platform.
- Their core settings (code, type) are protected from modification by regular administrators.
How to identify a Default group
Default groups are identified by a Default badge shown next to the group code in the group list and in the group detail header. When you attempt to edit or delete a default group, an informational error banner is displayed explaining the restriction.
What you can do
If you need to achieve a similar population to a default group but with custom rules, create a new Calculated Authorization Group with its own rule set and use that for your permissions or provisioning configuration instead. Default groups should not be used as the base for custom access patterns.
For system administrators
The Founder-level account has additional access to interact with default group configuration. If a default group needs to be restructured for platform reasons, this must be done through the Founder account and should be approached with caution, as changes may affect system-wide permissions.
